'Pink Star' diamond sold for $71.2 mln at HK auction

A stunning 59.6 carat pink diamond known as the "Pink Star" sold for a whopping 71.2 million US dollars at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong.

The sale sets a new world record, smashing a 60 million dollars pre-sale estimate. The winning bidder for the world's largest flawless vivid pink diamond was Hong Kong jeweler Chow Tai Fook.

The packed auction room applauded when the stone was sold, after three telephone bidders competed during five tense minutes of bidding.
